About

About Me:

I am a photographer based out of India. My passion lies in capturing images of people I’m intrigued by—their faces, the stories behind them, their lifestyles, cultures, and traditions. I like endlessly roaming around the streets, wherever I go, and spend time learning and understanding my subjects. Also, as is apparent from my blog, I do have a soft corner for portraits and images in black and white! If you would like to work with me for assignments and commissioned works, get in touch with me here.

About This Photoblog:

On August 1, 2008 I started this photoblog to showcase the images of people that I shoot  and creating images for this photoblog has always been an exciting and fulfilling challenge. As a mark of my fondness for black and white, this site uses only different shades of grey for all its elements.

  5. “EVERY FACE HAS A STORY TO TELL !”
says self taught photographer Joshi Daniel as he shares his aspirations with Ami Somaiya……

28 year old Joshi Daniel is a first time exhibitant at the Kalaghoda Festival this year. Candid, shy and soft spoken, Joshi is one of the many people who have migrated to Mumbai with starry dreams in their eyes. A student of commerce, Joshi completed his Bachelors Degree at Trivandrum, Kerela a few years ago. The youngest in a small but close knit family of four, Joshi started dabbling with his camera while he was still in college. A self taught photographer is what he insists on calling himself and is finally able to believe that the first solo exhibition of his photographs is being appreciated by one and all who’ve visited him at the Kalaghoda Festival.

As one walks by his side, one cannot help but notice the blunt black cloth he chooses as a backdrop to showcase his pictures. One look at this young photographer’s work and one can gauge his love for faces. “I am a peoples photographer,” says Joshi “and faces fascinate me. I like things that are unique and each face is different from the other. Every face has a story to tell. I like capturing the essence of people’s emotions with the aid of their expressions. There are these micro expressions that we all notice on the faces around us and before we know they disappear into socially acceptable masking of one emotion. I enjoy moments of truth, moments of pure simple emoting, and it is this that I look forward to capture each time I take that lens cover off my camera….” says Joshi as he fondly gazes at the faces in his pictures.

“My parents think I’m mad” says Joshi and they are very happy I’m so involved in what I do as this keeps me at bay. Don’t drive us mad they say.” he smiles as he talks of the undaunted support he had from his family when he chose to move to Mumbai in February, 2008. Ever since I came to Mumbai, I’ve been visiting the Kalaghoda Festival. This atmosphere is euphoric to me. It transposes me into a world so accepting of artists like me. The crowd here at the festival is so well aware of and eager to know about different forms of art. I’ve participated in exhibitions in Kerela, but nothing to match the zeal and zest of Mumbaikars. Everyone here is reaching out to the other in some form or the other.” he talks earnestly.

Joshi travels all the way from the western suburb of Andheri and has no qualms about taking up assignments that require him to travel. “I like life. I’d love to be a travel photographer. I do portfolios to fetch me my bread. Though I must admit I’m waiting to manage some butter as I am very selective about taking up assignments. I like street photography. I’m looking forward to doing documentaries. I’m amazed at the kind of networking that happens at Kalaghoda Festival. People from various walks of life have approached me and shared their desire to work with me. For all you know I shall have a coffee table book with my photo features ready before my next stint at this fest next year….” beams an optimistic Joshi with a twinkle in his eyes.

  10. hi Josh :)

I saw tons of your picture first thing in the morning and it has been so inspiring to read your about me. As an Indian following his dream of photography you are a huge inspiration to the budding photographer who don’t yet understand or know how to follow their dreams or give in to parental pressure. I have a brother who is suffering through something similar right now. Any advice that I could share with him?

    Loved your work.
    Will appreciate a response.
I would like to know more about how someone can learn or be an apprentice to you.

    Have a great weekend.

    1. I think it will be a struggle to follow dreams and create a great portfolio. But the never ending need for good images can be a good driving force and would be cool to have a job or something so that one can shoot what they like. Making money is one side and may be easy. But in the end liking the whole process matters more than the money part. Convincing parents is important. Otherwise will have to leave half way through. And I am bad in advising :p

I enjoy photos that display people in awe of and surrounded by nature, especially large spreads of water and wide landscapes. Photos of the ancient ones are inspiring, uplifting, and granting of the teaching of respect for our elders. Thank you for making my birthday special by having these photos displayed for everyone to enjoy. Art is an important gift.

  31. Hi Joshi,
Not sure if you remember me, but with your permission we made a carpet back in 2011 of the sadhu portraits.
There is a major textile fair in Germany that is coming up in January 2017 and we would like to display carpets based on your pictures.
This trade draws about 45,000 people from over 100 nations, We will name the collection as Joshi Daniels. This would be a great opportunity and exposure for both of us.

We do not intend to profit from this trade show, instead the purpose is to show case our ability to produce high quality carpets from pictures taken by exceptional photographers such as yourself.

I look forward to your response.

    Thanks and regards,
