No, they don’t keep their eyes wide open all the time but eyes and facial expressions are a big part of the performance.

Great photos. The 3-D make up is made with rice-flour – it takes years to master. Each colour and shape is symbolic – as complicated as heraldry

Wonderful shot. Kathakali make-up and dress are such a wonderful source of inspiration. Thinking out loud, I wonder how much “exchange” there may have been between Kathaklai and Nô theater in Japan, where actors are also heavily made up. I wonder if researchers have tried to analyze similarities and differences. Visual and text?
