Falconry, an art in which a bird of prey is taught to hunt in its natural environment, has been practiced by the Arabic and Asian peoples for centuries. Covering the falcon’s head with a hood will prevent it from reacting to things and remain calm.

  1. I can’t help it, Joshi, – and I know it’s common practice through the ages, – but I can’t help feeling this boarders to animal cruelty?
Just imagine if you were forced to live with a dark hood most of your life and then was suddenly exposed to bright sunlight?

  2. Great shot – as above it is will spark some emotions with regards to animal cruelty. But the hood does stand to help the bird to relax, it is not intended as anything but an aid.

  3. This is the first time i’m seeing a real picture of a peregrine falcon with leash and accoutrements. This Falcon far from looking regal looks emaciated. Probably the angle or it is a young falcon or your picture is telling a sad story of selfishness/ cruelty. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Very interesting photo. We just had a falcon land on our back fence over the weekend, looking for sparrows that frequent our yard, I’m sure. I’ll be posting that photo in a day or two. This falcon is slim by comparison. …maybe it’s the hat.

  6. Interesting photo. I suppose if we–all of God’s creatures–can’t see what we want, then we don’t try to fly away and get it. On the other hand, the will of the trainer and his control are all important. This could be a great shot for a discussion on many subjects.
