Velakali is a martial arts related dance. With those considerations, it’s easiest to say that it’s similar — not exact, to Capoeira which is a West African martial art originally incorporating dance as a means to disguise its tactical application during the the slave trade. These dance aspects fundamentally differentiate them from Southeast Asian martial arts like kung fu and Karate which heavily rely on patterned drills call ch’uan and kata that are often mistaken for dances by laymen but are not.
Feels gr8 to get a peek into that dance form that had almost gone extinct. Thanks for bringing it for the lesser fortunate ones like me who were not there to see it being performed after maybe forty years or so…yeah and the more i see the greedier i become wanting to see more. :)
I love the vibrance of this image. The man is obviously concentrating hard to make sure he doesn’t miss. Are there always celebrations going on where you live/photograph?
Thanks for including the link for more information about the Velakali performance. The pageantry must be stunning to see. This photo captures the dynamic of it. Nice work, Joshi.
