Velakali is a ritual art performed at temples in Kerala during festival time. The performers are dressed up like traditional soldiers with shields and swords/long canes.

  2. As usual, this is my second attempt to comment on your beautiful photo:) But the first attempt was in a village, so the internet cracked at the last minute. But this is to let you know that when your post comes alive on the blogosphere I am so eager to see what it would be!!! This post I like for these reasons–vibrancy of colors, I can sense motion in the pic–there is a continuity I feel, and it is so fresh that I was transported to the temple area and almost felt like I was seeing the performance in front of my eyes–great work!

  4. Apart from being a dedicated visual artist, I am also a lifelong martial artist; predominantly of Shotokan Karate. It’s fascinating to me how the sizes of their shields are the same as those used in Somali martial arts that use spears, sticks and canes.

    Good placement to get that shot.
